BETWELL, N. J., April 7, 2012 — As many as 20 percent of U. S. consumers say they boughtViagra, but the drug is not as effective as generic versions.
A recent study of the effectiveness of the drug found that it was less effective than the placebo. The study, conducted by the U. Food and Drug Administration, compared the effectiveness of the drug and the drug's generic version, the Pfizer-sponsored drug, with that of an American company. The FDA's drug ratings were published on Thursday, April 9.
The study examined the effectiveness of the drug on a total of 24,000 U. men and women who had a recent history of heart attack or stroke, or have recently taken nitrates (commonly used to treat chest pain) for angina or high blood pressure. The study was conducted by the National Institutes of Health, which is a collaboration between the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration and the U. Food and Drug Administration.

"It's a prescription drug and it has to be prescribed in a timely manner."
However, the study was conducted in response to a growing demand for cheaper, generic Viagra and a growing demand for cheaper alternatives to the brand name drug.
The FDA's own ratings, which are based on 100,000 telephone interviews with U. consumers, were not affected by the study, according to the report.
"The findings are very encouraging," said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of Public Citizen's health research group. "We've just seen a dramatic shift in consumer behavior in response to the drug."
In addition to the results of the study, the drug's other problems include, according to the report, that the drug can cause seizures, which are dangerous for some people.
The FDA has been working with manufacturers to find new versions of the drug. The drug, which is sold under the brand name Viagra, was made under the trademark of Pfizer Inc.
A Pfizer spokeswoman said the company was reviewing the research.

"It will be used by millions of people who already have PHARMAC disease. This is a new indication for a treatment for PHARMAC."
A new product that will have similar effects as Viagra, called "Viagra 25, 50, and 100," will be approved by the FDA on Monday, April 9.
"This new product will have an impact similar to Viagra, but will not be a competitor to Viagra," said Michael D. Rosen, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. "It will be used as a first-line treatment for the disease."
In addition, the FDA has granted approval to several other companies to manufacture and market a generic version of Pfizer's Viagra.
